In September, 2.5 million tourists in Croatia recorded 13.8 million overnight stays. This is five percent more tourists and overnight stays than in September last year. Growth was also achieved in the first nine months. Of two percent in arrivals and one percent in overnight stays, according to new data from the Croatian National Tourist Board (HTZ).
In the first nine months of 2024, a total of 19.7 million tourist arrivals were registered in Croatia. This is two percent more than in the same period last year, and almost 104 million overnight stays, or one percent more.
There were 17.1 million foreign tourists, or one percent more than in the first nine months of last year. The same percentage growth was achieved with 91.3 million overnight stays. There were eight percent more domestic tourists, or 2.6 million, who achieved 12.4 million overnight stays, or three percent more.
Foreigners accounted for 92 percent of all arrivals
Foreign tourists accounted for the majority of registered physical tourist traffic in September, i.e. 92 percent of all arrivals or 2.3 million, and 91 percent of overnight stays or 12.3 million, which is five percent more than in September 2023. 2024.
There were 12 percent more domestic tourists, or 267 thousand, and with 1.3 million overnight stays, they achieved an increase of one percent, placing them in second place among all nations that visited Croatia in September. In first place are tourists from Germany, who came in 488.2 thousand. They achieved 3.9 million overnight stays. These are increases of 8.4 and 13.1 percent compared to September last year.
Third place in September was held by tourists from Austria with 1.2 million overnight stays, or 1.3 percent more, while those from Slovenia were in fourth place with 1.1 million overnight stays, or 4.2 percent more. Poles were fifth with 916.4 thousand overnight stays, or 3.2 percent more than in September last year. The top ten markets also included the United Kingdom, the Czech Republic, Hungary, the USA and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Most nights spent in family accommodation
By type of accommodation, the majority of overnight stays were recorded in September in commercial accommodation, of which tourists had the most overnight stays or 37 percent of the total in September in family accommodation, followed by 29 percent in hotels and 25 percent in campsites, with all types of accommodation increasing compared to September 2023.
Among the regions in Croatia, 96 percent of all overnight stays in September were recorded in the Adriatic, with the highest number or 28.5 percent in Istria, which also had the largest plus compared to last September, of 8.2 percent. It is followed by Split-Dalmatia County with a share of overnight stays of 20.2 percent and an increase of 3.2 percent, and Kvarner with 16.3 percent of total overnight stays and an increase of seven percent.
Other Adriatic counties, as well as almost all continental counties, also achieved an increase in overnight stays in September, with the City of Zagreb standing out, which achieved the majority of continental overnight stays and a growth of 6.2 percent compared to last September.
