– A guest’s arrival at the port and boarding a ship intended for a luxury trip cannot take place in a port that is not suitable for that. We are certainly looking forward to the completion of the works in Omiš!, said Denis Grubiša from the Croatian Association of Private Shipowners (HUPB).

Commenting on the imminent completion of works in the port of Omiš for the HRT Regional News, Grubiša reminded that due to the announced works in the port of Split this summer, the large tourist fleet from Krilo Jesenica is looking for alternative ports for transfers of guests.

Port of Omiš worth 13 million euros

After three and a half years, the construction of the port and the large promenade in Omiš is nearing completion. The eastern entrance to the city, at the mouth of the Cetina River, is thus gaining new vistas, as well as a new tourist and maritime dimension. This is the largest single investment in the history of the County Port Authority – 13 million euros.

The entire promenade and most of the port area have already been paved with Brač stone, and one can already get an impression of how much this project is changing and beautifying Omiš. Final works are underway.

– Works related to horticulture, electrical installations, we are now at 90% completion of the project and we plan to finish it in two months, said Dominko Lukić, project engineer.

The people of Omiš are looking forward to the project being completed ahead of the tourist season.

– Great, it will be nice for us. Extraordinary, the best possible, it will be here in Omiš, we were still missing that and nothing else. It’s great, no question, there will also be a real promenade, I guess the port should come too, are the opinions of the citizens.

Capacity of the new port

The port itself was supposed to have a larger capacity and a much longer breakwater, but due to the great depth and soft terrain, such a project was abandoned. The majority of the population will continue to use the Cetina River between the bridge and the mouth as a permanent mooring. The new port will have a mixed purpose.

– Part of it would be for municipal berths, and this would remain as a port open to public traffic. According to the information we have from the Port Authority, there should be around 80 berths. Omiš is a small town, the port should not accommodate large ships, but rather what is appropriate for this town, explained Ivo Tomasović, the mayor of Omiš. Various tourist ships are certainly suitable. From smaller ones for one-day trips to larger ones for week-long cruises.
