The Korčula County Port Authority has opened a public consultation for the implementation of the project to build the New Port of Korčula – Port of Polačište, which includes the execution of construction works on the breakwaters. The estimated value of the job is 16,373,376.80 euros, and the tender represents the second attempt to implement the project after Aqua mont service from Serbia had to leave the construction site this spring due to exceeding deadlines. The New Port of Polačište on Korčula is the largest infrastructure project in the history of the island, and is financed mainly from the EU Cohesion Fund, and to a lesser extent from the Croatian State Budget.

In March, a major investment, the construction of the port of Polačište on Korčula, was halted, and the contractor for this project – Aqua mont service from Serbia – was given 30 days to leave the construction site due to non-performance of the work. Penalties for delay were also charged, but this was a small consolation compared to the fact that this significant project will be delayed compared to the planned one.

But five months later, good news arrives. The Korčula County Port Authority has opened a public consultation for the realization of the project to build the New Port of Korčula – Port of Polačište, which precedes the announcement of a tender for the contractor.

Tender costs from bank guarantee

As previously announced by the director of the Korčula County Port Authority, Ante Tvrdeić, the new tender for the old project will be financed from the activated bank guarantee in the amount of 1.45 million euros that was used to collect Aquamont Service. Namely, according to the contract, penalties for delay amounted to 14,500 euros per day, and this amount on March 12, 2025 amounted to 1.45 million euros.

According to data from the public consultation procedure, the estimated value of the job in the second attempt is 16,373,376.80 euros.

Scope of work

The Port of Polačište, once completed, will have 550 meters of operational shoreline, four loading and unloading ramps, waiting and parking areas for more than 250 cars, a port terminal building, and auxiliary facilities for selling passenger tickets.

The project envisages a 16 m wide, 55 m long operating jetty on the eastern part of the port, with a ferry connection 55 m long on the eastern side and 80 m long on the western side. On the eastern side, a 130 m long coast with a ferry connection is also planned. In the western part of the port, a mooring bank with a length of 218.4 m is provided, which enables the reception of several ships at the same time or one ship with a length of more than 200 m, and a western jetty, 50 m long and 16 m wide, on which there is a border crossing of a separate area of 50 m x 2.5 m, surrounded by a movable fence.

The passenger terminal building, where customs and border control facilities are located, is connected by a 110 m long pedestrian corridor, with a variable width from 0.9 m to 3.0 m, so that the total area of the international part of the port is 366 square meters. The project also envisages the construction of a passenger terminal, waiting and handling areas for loading vehicles and passengers, and the arrangement of a public transport bus stop that will transfer passengers to the center of Korčula.
