This morning, Split was hit by a sudden and powerful storm accompanied by strong winds, heavy rain and hail. In just a few minutes, the storm hit the city, causing extensive material damage in numerous locations.

Split port

In the port of Split, the ferry “Petar Hektorović”, due to stormy winds and a broken rope, lost control and hit two ships, a catamaran and a tourist excursion boat Kruna Mora, which unfortunately sank. Fortunately, there were no injuries, and the crew’s quick reaction prevented a major accident. Several ships untied and floated through the harbor, and damage was also recorded on other vessels.

Marjan, Poljud and City center

The storm brought down trees and branches, damaged vehicles and buildings, and flooded numerous city streets and basements. The Marjan area and the city center were particularly affected, where the water reached up to half a meter. Poljud Stadium suffered extensive damage to the roof and lawn, and damage was also caused to the structure of the stage for the Ultra festival. At the Brodosplit shipyard, a large crane was demolished and halls and vehicles were damaged.

Firefighters, utility workers and police are on the scene working to repair the damage and normalize traffic. According to data from the Split Clinical Hospital, 24 people sought medical attention, mostly for minor injuries. Traffic was hampered or completely blocked in several locations, and parts of the city were left without electricity.

Split Mayor Tomislav Šuta highlighted drainage problems and called on citizens to be cautious while work is underway to eliminate the consequences of the storm.
